Design inspiration comes from many sources. People, places, moments in time. Abstract ideas that flit about my mind until they take shape and become solid, tangible.
Penumbra began with musing over the perfect knit for a luxcious (yes, not a dictionary word. It’s me combining luxurious and luscious. Luxcious.) skein of golden merino-silk yarn. You see, I had picked up a hank of Swift High Street in Fields of Gold at a Forever Yarn trunk show. I wanted to let it shine. Nothing too complicated, I didn’t want to mask the subtlety of the yarn. I also didn’t want to mix it with something else. No, I wanted it to stand alone.
So i day dreamed for a while. And though of how much it reminded me of sunshine. And the idea that would become Penumbra took shape. Sketches were made, pattern drafted, and a sample knit. A mortal attempt to capture the fantasy of the shadows of the sun and moon.
One cannot have an eclipse with the sun alone; the moon is just as much of a protagonist in that story. So I search for the perfect moonlight - and found it in Wol Met Verve’s Merino Singles. Such a lovely shimmery grey with little prismatic flecks of color.
You can get a copy of Penumbra on Ravelry. Find your perfect sunlight or moonlight and cast on.
